Unlocking Potential: SIT’s Mentoring Insights 2024 Fuels Personal and Professional Growth
Mentoring Insights 2024 showcased the impact of mentorship in shaping careers, featuring keynote addresses and breakout sessions that encouraged attendees to follow their passions and turn their visions into reality.
The Mentoring Insights 2024 event, held on 4 October at the OTC Cafe at the National Library, was an unforgettable day of learning, networking, and inspiration. With 204 attendees, including 70 alumni, 123 students, and 11 faculty and staff, the event showcased the power of mentorship in shaping the future of both students and graduates from the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT).
The event kicked off with a warm welcome address by Assistant Provost, Elaine Siow, who emphasized the vital role of mentorship in personal and professional development. “As we navigate an ever-changing world, mentorship remains a powerful tool in unlocking new possibilities,” Siow said, setting the tone for an exciting day of engagement.
Keynote Speech
One of the day’s key highlights was the keynote address by Ms. Angela Wu, Director of the Monitoring & Operations Command Division at the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA). In her inspiring speech, Angela shared how mentorship has contributed to her personal and professional growth in the fast-evolving world of technology and media. Her insights into mentorship resonated deeply with the audience, leaving many feeling motivated to contribute to serve as an alumni mentor.
Another highlight of the day is the two breakout sessions led by our very own alumni mentors, Thu Ya Kyaw, Jaclyn Chow Jie Ling and Ng Yan Ying.
Breakout Room 1: Doing More of What You Love
In Breakout Room 1, Thu Ya Kyaw (SIT alumnus from Class of 2017 and Developer Advocate at Google) captivated the audience with his session on “Doing More of What You Love.” Thu Ya shared his personal journey of discovering his passions and making them the driving force of his career. Through his story, he inspired attendees to pursue what truly excites them, overcome setbacks, and create a life that is both fulfilling and authentic.
He encouraged students and alumni alike to identify what brings them joy, unlock their potential, and align their careers with their passions. His message was clear: by doing more of what you love, you don’t just find success—you find meaning in what you do. Thu Ya’s energy and candidness left attendees motivated to take bold steps toward a career that aligns with their true selves.
Breakout Room 2: From Vision to Reality: Opening Your Own Physiotherapy Clinic
In Breakout Room 2, Jaclyn Chow Jie Ling (SIT alumna from Class of 2014) and Ng Yan Ying (SIT alumna from Class of 2016), co-founders of Rehab Matters Pte Ltd, shared their journey of building their own physiotherapy clinic. Their session, titled “From Vision to Reality: Opening Your Own Physiotherapy Clinic,” was a hit with attendees interested in entrepreneurship.
The two SIT alumni spoke candidly about the challenges they faced—everything from navigating the complexities of healthcare regulations to maintaining a strong team and ensuring high standards of patient care. They also provided practical tips on how to transform a vision into a successful business, offering valuable advice to those interested in starting their own ventures. Jaclyn and Yan Ying’s story was a powerful reminder that with perseverance, passion, and the right mindset, anything is possible. Their session gave attendees a roadmap to take their own entrepreneurial dreams from concept to reality.
Networking: Building Bridges and Strengthening Connections
Following the breakout sessions, attendees had the chance to engage in a networking session, where they could meet fellow SIT alumni mentors from various industries and degree programmes. This was an opportunity for SITizens to reconnect with professors, share insights with mentors, and have meaningful exchanges with alumni who were eager to give back to the community.
The informal yet professional atmosphere of the networking event encouraged everyone to engage in valuable conversations, gain career advice, and explore potential collaborations. For many, it was a chance to build lasting relationships with like-minded individuals and expand their professional networks.
Looking Ahead: Empowering the SIT Community
The success of Mentoring Insights 2024 highlighted the strength of the SIT community—where students and alumni alike share a common drive to learn, grow, and support one another. The event not only provided practical advice and inspiration but also reinforced the power of mentorship in fostering both personal and professional development.
As the SIT Alumni Mentoring Programme continues to grow, these events are more than just networking opportunities—they are platforms for exchanging knowledge, building connections, and inspiring each other to reach new heights.
We can’t wait to see what future events will bring and look forward to seeing even more students and alumni benefit from the continued support of our vibrant mentoring community.
