It was incredibly insightful when my mentor Jun Liang, invited a former mentee to one of our sessions. Hearing both of their experiences firsthand was brilliant because, as Eleanor Roosevelt said, ‘Learn from the mistakes of others. You can’t live long enough to make them all yourself.’ This session wasn’t just advice; it felt like I got a fast-track look into potential paths and pitfalls, which has made me think much more strategically about my own future.

I was really grateful by how my mentor Shawn, went the extra mile to support me with an assignment. He actually reserved a room at his workplace so I could properly present my ideas and talk through the challenges in that formal setting. Getting his feedback in that professional setting was invaluable – he pointed out things I hadn’t considered and suggested concrete improvements that made a real difference to the project’s direction and my confidence in it.

The fact that my mentor Farhan, feels more like a friend than just a mentor is what I valued most. We have open conversations about everything – from uni work and career ideas to just general life experiences. It’s this sharing of stories and experiences from a senior who had walked this path before, made the whole experience so memorable and really supportive. It’s not just about advice; it’s about connection.

Being mentored by Bryan has been a game-changer, particularly with my job search. He didn’t just give generic advice; he helped me properly focus my approach and, surprisingly, it’s also shifted my general outlook on things. He has a knack for highlighting the crucial challenges I was grappling with – some I hadn’t even fully recognised – and opened my eyes to new ways of thinking about my career and options.

Alumni mentoring programme serves as a great opportunity to be connected with SIT family. I served as alumni mentor during cycles 2 &3. My student mentees were from the disciplines of physiotherapy, and criminology and security respectively. My expertise is in the fields of nursing and clinical research. However, through mentoring sessions, I learnt and appreciated the intersections between our disciplines. I enjoyed interdisciplinary mentoring as it allowed me to think of care plans from the perspectives of a physiotherapist for an example. Additionally, our interdisciplinary conversations emphasized the importance of collaborations and networking to maximise impact of health outcomes and educational research.

Mentorship isn’t a solo journey, it has also provided me with improvements and areas of growth on how to communicate with people, as well as methods to provide clearer guidance on what people want in their life and career. I’m glad to share that with some of my mentees, we have continued our mentorship journey post the SIT Mentorship Programme and allowed us to continue to grow as a person together. With experience in mentoring undergraduates, professionally, I am now more capable and able to guide and lead my team better.
