The Designing Pat
The Designing Pat is a Singapore home-based business run by Yuan Teng, a SIT graduate from the Class of 2016. With a background in early childhood education, her fascination with the interactivity of children’s books and a lifelong love for arts and craft inspired her to start this little venture. Every greeting card is handmade individually, featuring unique interactive elements like rotating wheels, shaker cards, and pop-up boxes – designed to be kept long after the occasion has passed. Beyond cards, she also offers an everyday illustrated collection – from embroidered socks and stickers to keychains and tote bags – each with a punny twist.

Hey everyone. I’m Rai, graduated in 2018 from BSc in Food & Human Nutrition, conferred by Newcastle University Upon Tyne – back when our campus was in NYP. On top of my current profession, my siblings and I run RAINFRESH. It started through the idea of pampering one self. With our busy schedule, we won’t really have much time to relax and unwind. A core goal of our cycle was actively supporting my mentee’s job search, specifically by assisting with her CV creation and interview preparation. I am delighted to report that she has made tremendous improvements in both the format and content of her CV, as well as significantly enhancing her interviewing skills. While she is still actively in the midst of the interview process and seeking a full-time role, the progress achieved thus far is substantial and highly encouraging.

It was incredibly insightful when my mentor Jun Liang, invited a former mentee to one of our sessions. Hearing both of their experiences firsthand was brilliant because, as Eleanor Roosevelt said, ‘Learn from the mistakes of others. You can’t live long enough to make them all yourself.’ This session wasn’t just advice; it felt like I got a fast-track look into potential paths and pitfalls, which has made me think much more strategically about my own future.

He actually reserved a room at his workplace so I could properly present my ideas and talk through the challenges in that formal setting. Alumni mentoring programme serves as a great opportunity to be connected with SIT family. I served as alumni mentor during cycles 2 &3. My student mentees were from the disciplines of physiotherapy, and criminology and security respectively. My expertise is in the fields of nursing and clinical research. However, through mentoring sessions, I learnt and appreciated the intersections between our disciplines. I enjoyed interdisciplinary mentoring as it allowed me to think of care plans from the perspectives of a physiotherapist for an example. Additionally, our interdisciplinary conversations emphasized the importance of collaborations and networking to maximise impact of health outcomes and educational research.
