Beach Sports, Friendships and Summer Vibes with Vinculo
Vínculo is the first ever SIT Alumni beach sports competition for alumni, by alumni
Sun, sea, and smiles were the order of the day as more than 110 SIT alumni reunited at Sentosa’s stunning beachfront for a day of friendly competition on the 26th of August. “Vinculo”, which means “connection” in Spanish, turned out to be the perfect recipe for alumni to rekindle old friendships, make new friends and show off their skills in an array of beach sports, including Captain’s Ball, Frisbee, and Futsal. The event was graced by Professor John Thong, SIT’s Deputy President and Provost.
Laughter and cheers filled the air as teams duked it out under the sun. It was a battle of wits and sportsmanship. But amid all the action, what truly shone was the sense of unity. SITizens had the chance to connect, over chilled beverages and mouthwatering snacks.
Chairing the organising committee for Vinculo was 2022 Physiotherapy degree programme graduate Ms Shermin Yeo. She said the biggest challenge for the committee was balancing between working full time and planning for the event and engaging alumni to sign up for Vinculo. They pushed on nonetheless, because the team wanted to provide a platform for alumni to come and network with one another. She also says: “It was very heartening to see past and present SITizens coming together and enjoying themselves during the games. Especially when we saw both the sports enthusiasts and professional players coming together, regardless of not knowing each other prior to event day. “
Ms Gwyneth Low, who graduated from Pharmecetuical Engineering in 2019, was encouraged by her batchmate from Ultimate Frisbee to join Vinculo. She said she enjoyed the games and the event gave her an opportunity to catch up with friends. She says: “It has been a long time since I saw everyone and I haven’t exercised under the sun for a long while, so I thought why not!”
The event wrapped up with an awards ceremony where the top teams were honored for their athletic prowess and teamwork. Vinculo gave SITizens a chance to create lasting memories, ensuring that the connections forged on the shores of Sentosa will endure, no matter how many tides come and go.
As Prof Thong put it in his welcoming remarks at the event: “SITizens stay close together to make things happen – and I’m proud to say that this has always been so.”
